DANB General Chairside Practice Test – Prep, Practice Questions & Study Guide

The instrument most commonly used to extract teeth that have not fully erupted is the extraction forceps. These forceps are designed specifically for the removal of teeth, including those that may be impacted or partially erupted. Their design allows for a secure grip on the tooth, which provides the leverage needed to remove it safely and effectively.

Extraction forceps come in various shapes and sizes, tailored for different types of teeth (such as molars or incisors) and specific situations, like impacted teeth. In the case of teeth that have not fully erupted, forceps can help grasp the tooth at its crown and facilitate its removal through careful rotation and elevation, making them the most suitable choice.

Other instruments mentioned are not primarily designed for tooth extraction. For example, a periotome is more focused on severing periodontal ligaments and is typically used in conjunction with other instruments during the extraction process. Surgical scissors are primarily for cutting soft tissue, and "younger materials" likely refers to a type of dental material rather than an extraction tool. This highlights the specialized function of extraction forceps in performing tooth extractions effectively.
